What are Some Opportunities for Data Scientists and Enthusiasts?
At Capsidea, we offer easy to use data analytics and a robust analytics platform. For those of you out there who love analyzing data — and we know you’re out there — we’ve compiled a list of five opportunities (two of which we will discuss today and the other three in our next blog) for self-employed developers or simply those passionate about data science to get more involved in analyzing data.
Contribute to Open Source Projects
One way to start putting your passion for data science to work is by contributing to open source projects online. Open sources projects often refer to computer programs, where the source is readily available to the general public to modify and utilize. Such a model of availability and design is meant to promote universal access to constructs and applications, and facilitate universal redistribution as well.
Info and data enthusiasts stand to gain a lot by engaging in open source projects, as their content may be redistributed and be seen by a large group of other data enthusiasts. Information will be shared and added to, apps or projects could be started around your data, and you can even gather more information from others. Sites such as OKFN Labs and GitHub can help you find other like-minded data scientists and contribute to projects as well as start your own.
An example of this is the Open Knowledge Foundation Network’s example of gathering data about aid in the Philippines last year. The data scientist who created this project pulls data from several resources, must know when those databases refresh and add information, and how to put it all together to be viewed easily and succinctly. People from around the world can add and modify these projects, improve the interface, and disseminate your information in an infinite number of ways.
Join Developer Communities
Many data scientists like to display their information in ways that are accessible to the general public. Here on our Capsidea blog, we’ve written about the importance of using infographics. If you like data and enjoy making or just sharing infographics, there are a lot of developer communities online with which to get involved. For example, the Visual.ly developer community is a large group of people (over 500,000 according to the site itself) who create and visualize brands and data.
Benefits of joining a community such as Visual.ly’s include gaining inspiration from what others are doing and researching, and getting feedback from other data enthusiasts on your own projects. Like-minded analysts may have broad networks on which to share your infographics and garner you more exposure.
Here is an example of a project that’s trending within the community. This infographic depicts “The Quest for Great Content” and discusses worldwide internet penetration and polls marketers on their future spending budgets. Shared within the week, already the graphic has been seen over 1,000 times by other data visualists. This infographic about typography has gained over 34K views within a few weeks.
Summary
In our next post, we’ll discuss where to go next after joining like-minded data scientists and getting a feel for the community. Taking data analysis to the next level, you’ll learn about competing in data related contests, joining more advanced groups, and how to start you first data project.

Thanks for helping me to get new thoughts about computers. I also possess the belief that one of the best ways to keep your notebook computer in best condition is to use a hard plastic material case, and also shell, that will fit over the top of your computer. These kind of protective gear usually are model targeted since they are made to fit perfectly over the natural outer shell. You can buy all of them directly from the vendor, or through third party sources if they are available for your notebook, however only a few laptop can have a spend on the market. All over again, thanks for your guidelines.

I have seen that nowadays, more and more people are attracted to surveillance cameras and the discipline of photography. However, really being a photographer, it’s important to first shell out so much time deciding which model of video camera to buy as well as moving store to store just so you could buy the most economical camera of the trademark you have decided to decide on. But it does not end now there. You also have to take into account whether you should buy a digital photographic camera extended warranty. Thx for the good points I accumulated from your blog.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
