Monday Features: Scroll, Sort and Control Your Charts

Hello readers. Today’s Monday Features are all about making it easier to get insight from your data. Excited to learn about it? Continue reading.

Below is a quick guide to the new features. You can scroll down to learn more or you can jump to the sidebar to subscribe to email updates.

  1. Scrolling: See insights within historical data.
  2. Sorting: Choose the filters by which you’d like the data to be sorted.
  3. Set actions to controls: Choose which charts controls should have influence on.

Scrolling. Capsidea is used by both data scientists and educators to conduct research. Often they want to learn how something changes over time to track patterns, abnormalities and correlations. This usually requires many data points to be available for the chart. In addition, researchers need flexibility in switching from longer time spans to days and vice versa.

Recently we have learned from the Data Visualisation Catalogue that the best way to visualize a time series is via line chart or one of its derivatives such as a spline or area chart. With this in mind, we can add scrolls to all line, spline and area charts. This allows us to visualize a great amount of data and see it at any scale.

How to:

Scroll appears automatically. See the example below. I used our Quandl connector to extract Apple’s trading volume data.

Sorting.

Sorting is the key feature for nominal comparison. For example, sorting bars ascending or descending allows to rank categories to see more or to highlight high or low values. Capsidea lets you sort data descending, ascending, alphabetically and even manually. However, till now, you couldn’t sort values if you had several metrics or groups to compare. Now, you can choose what filters and dimensions with which to sort values.

How to:

First, using Capsidea’s drag-and-drop interface, I have charted sales grouped by regions. Then I added another dimension - product category - to see the sales in detail for each region.

To look deeper into data I sorted sales descending by regions, to find out which region makes more money. Then, within each region, I sorted sales by product category.

Controls.

We have already written about value controls. Value controls as well as group controls help to engage readers because they allow us to interact with the data viz and to discover new insights. Up until now, controls added to dashboard influenced every block on a dashboard. Now you can manage them all! Capsidea lets you to choose which blocks will be controlled.

How to:

Last time we posted, we wrote about dependent charts and actions. Setting up control actions is a similar process. Moreover, when you add controls to the dashboard, the actions are already set up. So, all you need to do is delete any unnecessary actions. See the example below. Here, I want product category control to manage a number of products and sales versus profit charts. So, I just delete the action between controls and the pie chart.
