Visually representing information - no matter what type of info - has been around, arguably, since the dawn of design and even communication. However, nowadays with advances in analyzation technologies and digital imaging, along with the spread of the internet, data visualization has pushed itself to the forefront of design, media, and research. There are many artists and data scientists who have been impacting the world of data visuals, and we’ve compiled a list of six of them who all work in different areas of research or tech, and all bring a wide array of skills to the data viz movement.
1. Aaron Koblin
Flight Patterns
Aaron Koblin made an amazing interactive map which charts air traffic across the USA, specifically North America. The data he built includes information about aircraft models, flight routes, and even their altitudes. While Aaron Koblin’s data analysis and visualization work has been exhibited around the world, he maintains his position as a Technology Lead at Google’s Creative Lab. He says about Flight Patterns:
This work was originally developed as a series of experiments for the project “Celestial Mechanics” by colleagues Scott Hessels and Gabriel Dunne at UCLA. FAA data was parsed and plotted using the Processing programming environment. The frames were composited with Adobe After Effects and/or Maya. Visit original project website here.
2. Brandon Martin-Anderson
Shortest Path Tree of Seattle
Brand Martin-Anderson created the Open Street Map of Seattle which is a data-based visualization of pedestrian and bike paths within the city of Seattle. What’s it show? The shortest destination paths on the street grid of Seattle used analytics derived from an Open Street Map. Bicycle and walking paths are weighed with preference, and the interstate routes are heavily down-graded to balance the paths out. In addition, the width of each branch is proportioned to be the square root of the sum of the branches that are accessible on that route. Martin-Anderson has also done the shortest paths for Portland and the Bay Area, including San Francisco.
3. Neil Freeman
Connected Places
Neil Freeman’s bio claims he is an artist and urban planner. The project you see above depicts cities, towns, and villages in the U.S. that are identically named and linked by thin, connecting lines. The piece was commissioned by Next City.
Next City is: “non-profit organization with a mission to inspire social, economic and environmental change in cities by creating media and events around the world.”
4. Dave Bowker
One Week of The Guardian
Dave Bowker‘s graphic above is a visual representation of the links and relation between headlines, authors, and pages from The Guardian’s Thursday edition. The weight of each line is proportional to a story’s word count, and is aligned around the radius of the main circle corresponding to authors, categories, and more. Said categories, such as Science, Society, Politics, and Culture correspond to each color used in the graph. Bowker says he created this infographic as part of a senior these, and says of the piece:
“Every day all over the world millions of people read the news, but often give little regard to the way it’s presented.”
5. Pedro Monteiro
What Type of Events Affects Oil Prices?
Pedro Monteiro is a Portuguese art director and designer, and he created this informative visualization above which charts oil prices over ten years, ending in July 2008. In this graphic, he matches up the price of gas and oil with any major political events that may have affected them. He is quoted as saying:
“Lately I’ve been more and more interested in charts and ways of finding visual solutions to show both data and information…In this chart I’ve mixed the data from the oil prices in the last 10 years with the main events that influenced those prices.”
6. Manuel Lima
Visual Complexity
Manuel Lima, the creator of the piece above, is not only an interactive designer and researcher, but also the founder of the site VisualComplexity. This site is “a home for complex network visualizations from creators hailing from a multitude of disciplines.” Proving that inspiration and art really can come from anywhere, Manuel Lima was heading up the User Experience Designer of next generation software for Nokia when he created all of this.
Whether you work for a large hardware company or do independent research, data analysis and visualization can help you in your endeavors, projects, or personal goals. Anyone can make a great data viz concept, and follow through with the help of platforms like Capsidea, or sites like Visual.ly.

Excellent blog! Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers? I’m hoping to start my own site soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you propose starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m completely confused .. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot!

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Today, I went to the beach front with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!

These days of austerity in addition to relative anxiousness about getting debt, many people balk contrary to the idea of employing a credit card to make purchase of merchandise and also pay for a vacation, preferring, instead only to rely on the tried along with trusted method of making settlement - cash. However, if you possess the cash on hand to make the purchase in whole, then, paradoxically, this is the best time to use the card for several reasons.

With havin so much content and articles do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright infringement? My blog has a lot of completely unique content I’ve either written myself or outsourced but it looks like a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my permission. Do you know any ways to help prevent content from being ripped off? I’d truly appreciate it.

Just about all of what you mention happens to be supprisingly legitimate and it makes me ponder the reason why I had not looked at this in this light previously. Your article really did switch the light on for me personally as far as this particular subject goes. Nonetheless at this time there is actually one factor I am not too comfortable with and whilst I try to reconcile that with the actual central idea of the issue, permit me see exactly what the rest of the subscribers have to say.Very well done.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
